How to repair a motorcycle tachometer William Machin Updated February 21, Older motorcycles use mechanical tachometers that operate by means of a cable. The cable connects the gauge to the engine crankcase, and the core of the cable turns at the speed of the engine. The majority of newer motorcycles use single-fire electronic tachometers that interface with the ignition coil and detect the rate of spark generated by the coil to the spark plugs. Repairing a mechanical or electronic tachometer gauge requires a fair degree of expertise. But repairing the system is not a complex task in terms of identifying and correcting problems. Locate the tachometer cable connection at the underside of the gauge. Remove the end of the cable from the gauge by turning the connector counterclockwise with pliers. String the end of the cable over the handlebars or ask an assistant to hold the cable so you can see the square rod at the end of the cable core. Start the motorcycle and observe the rod at the end of the core. The rod should be turning, which indicates the core of the cable is OK.

As an example, connect the VSS output to the Classic Instruments unit and then wire it to the speedometer.
Hit the button on the interface, drive the car an exact measured mile, and hit the button again.

The tank and sidecover stripes were chrome with red pinstripes. Surprisingly, it came with an 85 mph speedometer! The black bike was adorned with a thick grey stripe bordered by white pinstripes, and the red bike had a black stripe bordered with white pinstripes. The only Hondaline optional equipment available was Engine guards, body cover, and a handle-bar mounted quartz clock!
Road Test Honda has dressed its tough transverse-four cc engine in cruiser clothes with a button-down one-piece look. The engine may be a veteran, but the motorcycle around it is as new as the latest in designer jeans. In case you haven’t noticed, motorcycle manufactures are doing battle on at least two fronts these days New Tech and Styling.
Fix-it Pages Advertising Banner Height Speedometer Installation Tips A bicycle speedometer is most useful, not as a speedometer “I know I was doing at least 25 when I hit the tree, because I was trying to read my speedometer at the time Every bicycle guidebook gives riding instructions in terms of the distance you’ve traveled “At exactly 1. Because speedometers are easily broken off in a crash and even more easily broken off when the bike is placed upside-down to remove a flat tire , may I suggest you use riser handlebars which bend upward at the ends or bar ends.
speedometer must be hooked up to the ECM. If wired directly to the transmission intermittent shifting may occur. 2. Sensor Information The proper sensor necessary to provide the correct signal to the speedometer is not included with this instrument and can be purchased separately from your auto.
This seemed like the answer. The unit is the Audiovox CCS I bought mine from JC Whitney www. It is a completely electronic unit. Sounds like the answer, but they are twice as much money as the unit we are using here. But on some bikes, where space and or vacuum single cylinder bikes are a premium, this unit might be the only way to go. It uses an electric actuator to move the throttle.
The V Strom is very space challenged under its various fairings. Be warned, like anything you are attaching to your bike, especially if it is attached to the throttle linkage, if done improperly, or without the highest regard to quality workmanship, it could and just might kill you, passengers, standers-bys, brother-in-laws, small children, deer, democrats and republicans! I assume no responsibility or liability for anything you do. Rather than include them in this document which would make it quite large.
The steps are really quite simple. Remove fairing, install servo assembly and tie into throttle. Install dash mounted control switch to handle bars.
These gauges are standard on automobiles, but not featured on all models of motorcycle. You could install an after-market gauge with ordinary automotive tools, thus avoiding a trip to your mechanic. Examine the “dashboard” area of your bike and decide where you want to mount the gauge. Some tachometers are made to simply clamp onto the handlebars, while others can be housed within the risers.

Born to Ride Perfectly sufficient but objectionally harsh over sharp bumps around town not even on the highway , is absolutely not a positive review of the rear suspension. There are plenty of bikes that are beautiful and have functional shock absorbers. Gruf Rude The foot forward, no rear suspension cruiser is just un-rideable for me. I was forced onto this style for a complete day twice in my career while going through the MSF Instructor course and it hurt my admittedly bad back so much I declined to take the position heh, heh as instructor.
Cruisers apparently work well for many, but not for me. Born to Ride The riding position is better with floorboards and a bigger saddle, and the position is far more comfortable when there is a nice cushy set of shocks under you. I can ride my dads T-Bird all day no problem. I like to hook my heels over the edge of the floorboards on my Guzzi. This bike is a full, frame, suspension redesign away from being decent. A Sabre V65 looks better, handles better, is more comfortable.
Ryan I appreciate you giving me the time of day! Why are you covering your face as though it were cold? Are you too baby-faced to put on a proper outlaw scowl? Were you trying to boost your intimidation factor?
You could get a chrome or a black bezel, but choosing colors was like the first Model T: So just about everyone had generic looking gauges, and the only thing that stood out was where you mounted them. If you like the nostalgic look of those old gauges, you can still get that sort of gauge today with either a mechanical or electrical sender. Auto Meter’s Custom Shop allows you to customize your gauges to match or contrast your car. With the various colors and sizes of automotive LEDs available, you can choose just about any color for the back lighting.
We contacted Dakota Digital to get some insight into the technology behind their new VHX series of gauges.
Welcome dear customers! Andy Tach is always looking for improvement in its services and products. To kick-start the year , the company launches its brand new website and will be adding new products to its line-up in the following weeks.
This might seem like a minor issue, but I find that a temperature gauge is very helpful during the winter to help determine the possibility of freezing conditions. I also find it interesting to see how temperatures will fluctuate with altitude changes during the different seasons. My three biggest requirements for an ambient temperature gauge were: I found the meter was available for purchase through quite a few different websites that cater to motorcyclists, but I was unable to find any further information on an actual company called Show Chrome Accessories on the Big Bike Parts website.
Show Chrome Accessories products appear to be popular in the aftermarket, with many different types of goodies mostly chrome, of course primarily for the cruiser and touring segment. All of my motorcycles have been equipped with large alternators a requirement capable of handing the additional loads of accessory lights and heated gear. The stop watch function would most likely never be used, but having a flashing LED ice alert could be handy and the price was perfect!
During my search for other waterproof ambient temperature gauges the only other choices I found were some that simply clip onto the handlebars with a clock face, and a few unexciting gauges designed primarily for marine use. Owners mentioned that if it got wet, the display would go blank. Most displays returned to normal operation once they had dried out while a few never recovered.
Some owners had solved this by wrapping their Volt Meter in plastic or something similar, while others had gone through the trouble of sealing every opening in order to keep the device operational when wet.
The patent numbers you will find on the triangular plate on the timing cover and in period brochures refer to several Triumph features by now standard across the range. The T21 was designed from the outset as a machine incorporating for then; modern features and aimed to attract new buyers looking for clean inexpensive transport. The design brief was for a clean, high performance, cc roadster and the components and specifications applied reflect this.
A bolted on sub frame supports the seat and rear suspension while additional welded on brackets are provided for other components.

It has a rear inlet tube welded on at a right angle that connects to the external air intake via angled rubber hose, an early Ram-Air design if you will. The canister connects to the carburetor via a J-shaped hose on the engine side. This J-shaped hose clamps onto the canister cover containing the air filter. If you don’t do anything else in the way of maintanence on your Isetta, make sure you change the oil and at least clean, if not replace, the air filter on a routine basis.
The Isetta electrical system calls for 12 volt, 31 amp battery with negative ground. We have a Harley-Davidson Non-spillable sealed battery in our car. It’s H-D part number With it’s compact size, there’s no worry about fitting in the battery box or being too tall to fit under the seat.
Rear view of both instruments, side-by-side, shows the cable hookup for the mechanical unit and the electronic input plug receptacles for the other unit. Whichever type of speedometer that you use when building a modified vehicle it will need to be calibrated to compensate for any change in tire size or gear ratio. The mechanical, cable-driven speedometer can be corrected by replacing the gear or gears that are located on the output shaft of the transmission or with an externally mounted ratio adapter.
Mechanical Speedometer For over a century the mechanical eddy current speedometer has been used and is still in widespread use.
Simple Motorcycle Wiring Diagram for Choppers and Cafe Racers I get a lot of questions about wiring motorcycles. Sometimes people are just trying to fix their blinkers and aren’t familiar with how motorcycle electrics work – but more often than not I get requests about .
An essential part of building any sort of chopper, bobber, cafe racer, brat bike, or rat rod is getting rid of all the unnecessary items. You might have checked the wiring diagram for your bike already and seen something like this: The above diagram is from a Honda CB Custom dual cam bike. A lot of the controls can be removed, blinkers, gauges and indicators, relays and switches. Below is a generic wiring diagram I whipped up that can be used as a guideline.
This diagram is setup to run a headlight and brake light, keep your battery charged, and have a keyed ignition. When working on your existing wiring loom it is best not to just start cutting wildly like I do! Inside your headlight is where much of the wiring converges, so is a good place to start. Remove your headlight and start trimming back the sheaths.
Slice back the sheaths of the wiring loom as far as possible to expose the wires inside. If this is your first electronics exploration, start with something easier.
Wiring pinouts for the electronic cluster are here What you will need to accomplish this task: Speedo head, or entire cluster if converting to gauges in which case you will also need to change the water temperature and oil pressure sending units. The sending unit VSS from the transmission of the donor vehicle, along with appropriate gears to ensure your speedo reads correctly.

How do I hook up my tachometer? Standard Ignition Coil If you have a standard ignition coil you can use the negative terminal of the coil for the signal source. If you have a high output capacitive energy discharge type coil it is recommended that you install a tachometer filter to prevent damage to the tachometer. Ignition Box If you have an ignition box i.
If you have a 5V Tachometer signal you can: Install a ohm “pull up” resister from the 12V gauge power source ACC to the signal wire to increase the signal strength. Contact us to special order a tachometer that will work with the 5V ECU signal.
