Meteorology[ edit ] The National Weather Service defines Santa Ana winds as “Strong down slope winds that blow through the mountain passes in southern California. The Santa Anas are katabatic winds —Greek for “flowing downhill”, arising in higher altitudes and blowing down towards sea level. Any low-pressure area over the Pacific Ocean, off the coast of California, can change the stability of the Great Basin High, causing a pressure gradient that turns the synoptic scale winds southward down the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada and into the Southern California region. This cool, dry airmass sweeps across the deserts of eastern California toward the coast, and encounters the towering Transverse Ranges , which separate coastal Southern California from the deserts. The airmass, flowing from high pressure in the Great Basin to a low pressure center off the coast, takes the path of least resistance by channeling through the mountain passes to the lower coastal elevations, as the low pressure area off the coast pulls the airmass offshore. The air has already been dried by orographic lift before reaching the Great Basin, as well as by subsidence from the upper atmosphere, so this additional warming often causes relative humidity to fall below 10 percent. During Santa Ana conditions it is typically hotter along the coast than in the deserts,  with the Southern California coastal region reaching some of its highest annual temperatures in autumn rather than summer. These result from precipitation on the windward side of a mountain range which releases latent heat into the atmosphere which is then warmer on the leeward side e. If the Santa Anas are strong, the usual day-time sea breeze may not arise, or develop weak later in the day because the strong offshore desert winds oppose the on-shore sea breeze. At night, the Santa Ana Winds merge with the land breeze blowing from land to sea and strengthen because the inland desert cools more than the ocean due to differences in the heat capacity and because there is no competing sea breeze.

I’m not sure if it’s a case of being homesick, as I hail not hail from SoCal itself, but from Fresno which is a couple hours to the north. Nonetheless, my parents grew up there and through my numerous trips there, I have seen plenty of the the car-crazed place that is Southern California. The brains of American auto culture may be in Detroit, but the heart of it has to be in LA.
I mean, where else can you go to a jam-packed cruise event on a random weeknight in the middle of the winter? We’ll be looking at many parts of SoCal automotive life during the next month, and first I’d like to start out with a basic look at SoCal’s significance to motoring over the years. To be perfectly honest, the state of California has never been an car enthusiast-friendly place with its mega strict smog laws, high theft rates, and aggressive law enforcement, but none of that stuff has really seemed to put a damper on the spirits of car-crazed Southern Californians.
No matter what kind of automotive style you might identify with, chances are SoCal has played a large role in its development. Hot Rods are one of the most original forms of the intimate relationship between man and car, and SoCal is where you will find the roots of hot rodding. In the days before and after World War II, young men would run their homebuilt creations flat out on the local dry lake beds like El Mirage.
The events were sanctioned by the Southern California Timing Association, an organization that still hosts speed trial events to this day. In addition to the SCTA, Wally Parks formed the National Hot Rod Association in as the first drag racing sanctioning body in the world with the aim of injecting safety and legitimacy into the chaotic world of early street racing and hot rodding.
While the original hot rodders were all about building stripped down land rockets, in areas like East Los Angeles Latino youth were converting to their cars into low and slow creations built not for speed, but for cruising and looking cool. Lowriders have gone on to become some of the most iconic custom vehicles ever and they can now be seen with a strong following in countries all over the world, with a particularly big fan base here in Japan.
On the same token, as hot rodders moved on to larger, more practical cars such as lead slead Mercurys, the kustom movement began and SoCal-based builders like George Barris would become pioneers in the scene.

Upon being presented with claims that radiometric dating is totally erroneous, a question naturally arises: If radiometric geochronology is half as bad as Woodmorappe’s list suggests, then how in the world did geologists ever arrive at a tight consensus for the official dates? Look at the various radiometric tables in use over the last 20 years or so and you will find, at least for the fossil-bearing strata, a remarkably tight agreement.
Did the geochronologists throw darts to determine the accepted dates? Matson, , p. Dalrymple, an expert in radiometric dating with lots of hands-on experience, puts the percentage of bad dates at only percent. Thus, we clear away the first illusion spun by creationism, namely that most of the dates are bad, that the radiometric picture is totally chaotic. In fact, it is not at all unusual for several different radiometric methods to agree within a few percentage points on a date.
When you consider that each radiometric method is subject to different types of error, that the different “clocks” run at different speeds, such an agreement would be extremely rare on the basis of pure chance.
